A working mill at the heart of rural life.

Constructed around 1810 to 1814 from local ironstone, the windmill was designed as a five-storey tower mill, complete with six sails in a rare configuration known as the “Six Arm Lincolnshire Cross”.

For much of its early life, the mill played an essential role in the local farming economy, grinding corn for surrounding villages. It continued this work well into the 20th century, before later being adapted to process animal feed.

Conserving Wymondham Windmill for future generations.

After milling operations ceased in the 1960s, the windmill fell into disuse. In the late 1970's restoration bega and in 1985 Nigel Moon – miller and owner of local Whissendine Windmill was instrumental in it's restoration, who rebuilt the cap of our mill bringing it to 2016 and the next phase of restoration - The Living Mill, aided by European and Lottery funding.

In 2016, a major new chapter began with the “Living Mill” project, after receiving £36,500 in funding from the Heritage Lottery Fund (HLF) and £34,500 from East Leicestershire LEADER. This initiative not only conserved the building but also reconnected it with the community, ensuring its history could be shared and enjoyed for generations to come. A local attraction.

The 7 acre visitor attraction is open to the public 364 days a year and welcomes 35,000 visitors annually. Vincent and Sarahjayne Fletcher run the Tea Room for which serves lunches and cakes making the site a meeting point and destination. The windmill is at the heart of the site and visitors are free to explore the building.
