Short Film: Saved for a New Generation

The first major step has been taken in securing the future of our windmill. On a very cold but bright morning last week a huge crane lifted the cap from the tower so that Adam the millwright can restore its weathered structure from the safety of the ground.

Nigel Moon from Whissendine Windmill was on hand to offer his wealth of experience too. He was present the last time Wymondham’s cap was removed almost exactly 32 years ago. The repairs we are making will help this amazing building last another generation at least.

We also made an amazing discovery that day. Looking at the woodwork that was taken from the building in the 1920s and stored ever since Adam said ‘It’s quite possible these are the oldest fan blades in existence, certainly they’re a very very rare survival.’ He has taken one back to his workshop to use as a pattern so he can make new ones to put back on the mill when the cap is hoisted back into position in the Spring.

Millwright Adam Marriott will be leading the conservation work. We are looking for volunteers to help him over the coming months.
